Eco-Oil Miljöbränslen i Sverige AB was founded 2007 as a private research project with the goal to develop exact chemical copies of commonly used fossil fuels - with the difference that the reinvented fuel product should be 100% fossil-free.
15 years later, Eco-Oil is able to offer refinery techniques to produce a complete line of fossil free fuel products; petrol, diesel, jet fuel and even bio-LPG - all thanks to Eco-Oil’s unique and world-patented fuel catalysis.
The company is headquartered in Delaware in the US, but all the research and development takes place at the Department of Chemistry at Umeå University in the northern parts of Sweden. The research has been funded partially by the owners privately, partially by several renowned Swedish research funds, prominently the Wallenberg foundation - the largest financier of industrial research in Sweden.
Eco-Oil secured its first world patent in 2017 for a catalyst system which converts alcohol to synthetic petrol, a petrol that is not only an exact chemical copy of its fossil counterpart, but also has 4% higher energy content than regular fossil-based petrol. This product was given the name ECO-100+ and is approved according to the European fuel standard EN 228 for use in traditional petrol engines.
In parallel of the research work leading up to the ECO-100+ petrol product, the Eco-Oil research team has refined and further developed the catalyst process, not only to make the petrol catalyst even more efficient but also to include methods to produce synthetic diesel, jet-fuel and even bio-LPG.
